In a major step toward reducing maternal and neonatal deaths, Plateau State has hosted a five-day capacity-building workshop in Jos to strengthen the implementation design of the Maternal and Newborn Mortality Innovative Initiative (MAMII). The workshop brought together health professionals, traditional leaders, and development partners to align strategies with Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s healthcare priorities and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Declaring the workshop open, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring women and children across Plateau have access to affordable, life-saving health services. He described the initiative as more than just a lifesaving project, but a model for sustainable and scalable maternal care.

Stakeholders emphasized the need to tackle preventable causes of maternal mortality, such as postpartum haemorrhage, ignorance, and reliance on unskilled delivery methods. The sessions highlighted the importance of maternal health education, skilled birth attendance, antenatal care, and stronger community engagement.

Presentations from state and federal agencies reinforced the collaborative approach, while goodwill messages from traditional rulers and health leaders underlined the shared responsibility to protect mothers and newborns.

Closing the event, Plateau State’s Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mr. Hosea Bitrus, urged participants to turn their commitments into practical action that would safeguard mothers and children across the state.
