In the early hours of September 5, 2009, Nigeria and Africa lost one of its most formidable champions of justice and democracy. Chief Abdulganiyu “Gani” Oyesola Fawehinmi, GCON, SAN, passed on, leaving a legacy of courage, principle, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law. His life was not only a testament to legal brilliance but also a model of mentorship, humanitarianism, and civic leadership.
Governor of Kaduna State, Sani, CON, who counts Chief Fawehinmi as a personal mentor, recalled their first encounter during Nigeria’s struggle against military authoritarianism, particularly in the aftermath of the June 12, 1993, presidential election annulment. Chief Fawehinmi’s advocacy was pan-Nigerian, transcending ethnic and regional divides, and his leadership inspired countless young Nigerians, including the governor, to embrace the fight for justice and democracy.
Known as the “Senior Advocate of the Masses,” Chief Fawehinmi championed the rights of the oppressed, often at great personal cost. His legal activism, leadership of the Joint Action Committee of Nigeria (JACON), and scholarship initiatives empowered thousands of Nigerians and strengthened civil society. His vision extended beyond the courtroom, shaping Nigeria’s political landscape through the National Conscience Party (NCP) and defending the constitutional space for political participation.
Governor Sani highlighted that Chief Fawehinmi’s influence remains evident in Nigeria’s democratic institutions today. His mentorship instilled in him and many others the principles of courage, patience, strategic engagement, and principled struggle. Sixteen years after his passing, Chief Fawehinmi’s life continues to serve as a beacon for justice, integrity, and the protection of democratic freedoms.
As Nigerians reflect on his contributions, Governor Sani reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the ideals of his mentor, emphasizing that the challenge ahead is to sustain and build upon Chief Fawehinmi’s vision for a just, fair, and inclusive nation.
