At the Africa Food Systems Summit 2025 in Dakar, Senegal, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, took part in a special Road to COP30 dialogue where policymakers and partners examined how agricultural innovation can support climate action across the continent.
Senator Kyari explained that food sovereignty in Nigeria is closely tied to adopting climate-smart practices such as resilient crop varieties, improved soil and water management, and the integration of renewable energy in farming. He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda has already placed food security at the heart of national policy, with a State of Emergency declared to fast-track solutions.
The Minister pointed to recent progress in modern farming techniques and clean-energy-powered irrigation systems, alongside efforts to empower young people and women in agribusiness. He said these steps not only boost food production but also contribute to cutting emissions and strengthening rural livelihoods.
Looking toward COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Kyari emphasized the importance of unlocking more climate finance, expanding access to carbon markets, and building stronger partnerships that can scale up innovation. According to him, Nigeria sees climate action as central to achieving food security, while for Africa as a whole, it is key to long-term resilience and prosperity.
