President Tinubu Directs Federal Measures to Tackle Rising Food Prices, Bolster Food Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to implement immediate measures aimed at curbing Nigeria’s rising food prices, signaling stronger government intervention in the country’s food security landscape.

The directive prioritizes the safe and unhindered movement of farm produce across the nation’s transport routes, a strategy expected to ease logistics bottlenecks, reduce transportation costs, and ultimately bring down food prices in markets across the country.

This initiative is part of President Tinubu’s broader vision of achieving food sovereignty, ensuring not only the availability of food but also its affordability, accessibility, and nutritional value on a sustainable basis.

In line with these efforts, the government is set to launch a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to enhance agricultural productivity by tackling soil fertility challenges. Additionally, a revamped cooperative reform initiative is underway to mobilize resources and strengthen rural farmers’ capacity to actively participate in the economy. The cooperative sector has been highlighted as a key tool for resource mobilization, economic activity generation, and improving the livelihoods of its members.

The announcement comes at a time when Nigerians face soaring food costs, exacerbated by inflation, insecurity on farmlands, and supply chain disruptions. The administration’s push for the safe passage of farm produce, alongside fresh support for farmers, is being positioned as a critical step toward stabilizing food prices and securing the country’s long-term agricultural future.
