President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially flagged off RenewHER, a Presidential Women’s Health Transformation Initiative aimed at safeguarding maternal health and improving women’s well-being across the nation. The programme, described by the President as a national priority, seeks to position women’s health at the center of Nigeria’s development agenda.
Speaking at the Launch Gala and Awards held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday night, President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized that women’s health is fundamental to social stability and national progress. He noted, “There is no greater test of a nation’s character than the care it extends to its women. Maternal health is the heartbeat of every family, the compass of social stability, and the truest index of national welfare.”
The RenewHER initiative will establish a Presidential focal office on women’s health, working closely with the Federal Ministry of Health, the State-Wide Approach Coordination Office (SWAp), the Ministry of Women Affairs, and the Governors’ Spouses Forum. The programme aims to integrate women’s health priorities into every state, local government, and community across Nigeria.
A key component of RenewHER is the creation of an AI-powered National Women’s Health Digital Hub, designed to deliver geo-targeted campaigns on maternal survival, adolescent health, preventive care, and workforce development. The hub will also link healthcare to entrepreneurship, ensuring that women have access to both health services and economic opportunities.
President Tinubu highlighted the urgency of addressing maternal mortality, stating that RenewHER will complement existing initiatives such as MAMII and work with international development partners. “We owe every girl-child not just the eloquent promise of a better tomorrow, but the certainty of a healthier one,” he said.
Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, First Lady of Kwara State and Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors Spouses' Forum, lauded the initiative as a demonstration of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment. She assured that RenewHER would receive nationwide support through the Forum, working with state governments, the private sector, and relevant stakeholders to achieve its objectives.
Dr. Adanna Steinacker, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, credited the vision of President Tinubu for making RenewHER possible and urged stakeholders to collaborate in creating a unified movement to improve women’s health in Nigeria.
Ms. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Country Representative for Nigeria, described RenewHER as a bold, transformative initiative that recognizes women’s health as a driver of socio-economic growth. She affirmed the UN’s readiness to collaborate with the programme to expand access to healthcare for Nigerian women.
The event also drew dignitaries including the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, governors’ spouses, and foreign diplomats.
