The Federal Government has officially removed the 5% excise tax on telecommunications services, a move aimed at easing the financial burden on millions of mobile users across Nigeria.
The tax, which applied to both voice calls and data services, had faced widespread criticism from industry stakeholders and consumer advocates since its introduction under the previous administration.
Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the removal of the tax during deliberations on the recently passed Finance Act.
The policy change is expected to provide relief to over 171 million active telecom subscribers nationwide, many of whom have contended with a 50% tariff increase earlier this year.
