The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA) has launched a sensitization programme to raise awareness on flood prevention and disaster preparedness across the state. The initiative, held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, emphasized the importance of community-level engagement in mitigating risks during the peak rainfall period.

Speaking at the event, the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by Mrs. Aladetimehin Foluso, highlighted the urgent need to strengthen early warning systems at the grassroots. She explained that building resilience within local communities is crucial to preventing loss of lives and property, especially as rainfall intensity increases during the season.

Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye, noted that the sensitization programme was timely in promoting a culture of preparedness, response, and resilience among citizens. She assured participants that the state government would soon establish Local Government Emergency Management Committees across all 16 LGAs to coordinate disaster management efforts at the community level.

The General Manager of EKSEMA, Mr. Oludare Asaolu, urged residents to heed the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s predictions of flash floods and to avoid activities that exacerbate disaster risks. He stressed the need for compliance with environmental regulations and proactive engagement in community safety measures.

The programme brought together key stakeholders from government, security, and community leadership, reinforcing a shared commitment to disaster risk reduction. Through collaboration between NEMA, EKSEMA, and the state government, the sensitization exercise underscored the importance of enhancing community resilience and safeguarding lives and property against natural hazards.

This initiative reflects the proactive stance of both federal and state authorities in ensuring that Ekiti State is better prepared to face the challenges of seasonal flooding and other emergencies.
