The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has announced a temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, pending the determination of a motion before the Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State.
The decision followed a high-level meeting held at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, between the IGP and a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN.
The meeting, which focused on the legal and operational implications surrounding the enforcement of the Act, provided an avenue for open dialogue on strengthening collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Bar, especially in promoting the rule of law and public trust in law enforcement.
“There is no subsisting court order restraining the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991,” the Force stated. “However, in deference to public interest and respect for the Nigerian Bar Association, the enforcement has been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the court hearing on October 16, 2025.”
To further consolidate institutional cooperation, the IGP announced the establishment of a Police–NBA Joint Committee, aimed at improving mutual understanding, facilitating communication, and addressing legal and procedural concerns affecting both institutions.
The Nigeria Police Force also appealed to vehicle owners and motorists to use this grace period to regularize their documentation and ensure compliance with all existing laws regulating the use of vehicles fitted with shaded or tinted glasses across the country.
“The Force remains resolute in its commitment to enforcing all extant laws with fairness, transparency, and utmost respect for citizens’ rights,” the IGP emphasized. “We will continue to work closely with critical stakeholders in the administration of justice to maintain order and public confidence.”
The engagement underscores the Police leadership’s renewed commitment to building stronger partnerships with legal and civil institutions, aligning enforcement actions with constitutional principles and democratic values.
