Former public office holders and current aspirants must face rigorous scrutiny of their academic and professional certificates, according to a statement issued by political commentator Peter Obi following the resignation of the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, over discrepancies in his academic records.
PO described Nnaji’s resignation as a decent and honourable step, drawing parallels to Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, former Minister of Finance under President Muhammadu Buhari, who stepped down over issues related to her NYSC certificate. He emphasized that such discrepancies are serious criminal offences and must not be taken lightly.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Peter Obi called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant agencies to verify and authenticate the educational and professional credentials of all candidates, from the presidency down to local government councillors. He warned that dishonesty and criminality cannot continue to permeate leadership positions in Nigeria.
Highlighting the need for urgent reform, Peter Obi urged a comprehensive national review of the qualification verification process for public office holders, citing Ghana’s example, where educational claims of candidates are meticulously cross-checked prior to elections.
He criticized the current electoral system for carrying out little or no due diligence, noting that continuous false declarations and forged credentials undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy. Peter Obi called for immediate submission of all academic certificates for verification and public accessibility, detailing institutions attended from primary school to university.
Peter Obi concluded that truth, transparency, and accountability must underpin leadership in Nigeria, insisting that only through integrity can the nation build a system of public service anchored in honour rather than deceit.
“A New Nigeria is Possible,” he affirmed.
