Armed groups suspected to be bandits have carried out coordinated attacks across multiple communities in Kwara State, abducting several residents, including a school proprietor, the mother of a bride-to-be, and other villagers in a fresh wave of violence that has deepened insecurity in rural areas of the state.

The attacks reportedly occurred in different settlements within Ifelodun Local Government Area and nearby communities, where gunmen invaded in the early hours and evening periods, targeting homes and individuals linked to social gatherings and upcoming ceremonies.

In one of the affected areas, Iwo Odo-Ore and neighbouring communities, residents said armed men stormed the villages and abducted multiple people after firing shots into the air to disperse villagers. Separate reports indicate that at least five people were taken from one community alone, while six others were kidnapped in Gaa Dembo-Agunjin and two more residents were seized in Gaa-Idera during similar incursions.

Among those abducted was a well-known school proprietor, Alhaji Yusuf Yunusa, who was reportedly taken alongside other residents during preparations for a family-related event. Community members described him as a prominent figure in the education sector whose abduction has caused widespread concern.

In another disturbing account, gunmen reportedly targeted families preparing for a wedding ceremony, abducting the mother of the bride-to-be along with another relative. The attackers were said to have disrupted preparations for the event, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety as gunfire rang out.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the attackers moved from house to house, selecting victims and forcing them into the bush. Some residents said valuables were also stolen during the raids, while livestock was reportedly taken in certain areas affected by the attacks.

At least two residents were said to have sustained injuries during the incidents, including one person who was shot in the hand. Medical attention was reportedly delayed as many villagers fled the communities during the assault.

The latest attacks reflect a growing pattern of insecurity in Kwara State, particularly in rural and forest-adjacent communities where armed groups operate with relative ease due to difficult terrain and limited security presence. These groups are believed to rely on forest routes to move between settlements and evade security patrols.

Local sources say the attackers often operate in small but coordinated units, striking quickly and retreating into nearby forests with abducted victims before security forces can respond effectively. In many cases, victims are later held in remote locations while ransom demands are made to their families.

Communities in Ifelodun and surrounding local government areas have experienced repeated incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks in recent years, leading to heightened fear among residents. Some families have altered wedding plans, restricted travel, or relocated ceremonies to safer towns due to insecurity.

Security operations have been launched intermittently in response to such incidents, with efforts focused on locating bandit hideouts in forest areas. However, residents say these operations have not yet fully stopped the recurring attacks, as armed groups continue to exploit gaps in surveillance and difficult terrain.

In several affected villages, local vigilante groups have also been mobilised to assist formal security agencies, though they often face limitations in equipment and manpower compared to the armed groups they confront.

The abducted victims from the latest attacks remain in captivity as of the time of reporting, with no confirmed information on their location or whether contact has been made with their families. Relatives are reportedly in distress as they await updates.

Security agencies are expected to intensify search efforts in the affected areas, while investigations continue into the exact number of attackers involved and their possible escape routes.

The renewed wave of abductions has further intensified calls from residents and community leaders for stronger security presence in rural Kwara, particularly in forest-bordering communities that have become frequent targets of armed groups.

For now, the situation remains tense as affected communities grapple with fear, uncertainty, and the aftermath of yet another series of coordinated attacks.
