The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has issued a formal correction regarding the official title of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following what it described as recurring and embarrassing errors by some organizations and media outlets.

In a statement personally signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the presidency’s protocol office clarified the correct appellation and warned all public and private institutions to adhere strictly to the approved format.

The directive, which was released on Friday, May 8, 2026, arose from an error observed in a publication by a national daily on Wednesday, May 7, 2026. The SGF noted that the mistake was not an isolated incident but part of a troubling trend of inaccurate references to the president. Akume urged editors, reporters, and organizations to verify official titles through appropriate government channels before publication to avoid what he described as "avoidable and embarrassing errors."

"For the record, the correct and official appellation is: 'His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria,'" Akume stated. The inclusion of the national honour "GCFR" (Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic) is a mandatory element of the president's full title, and its omission or misplacement has been a source of contention. Akume stressed that adherence to proper protocol was necessary in official reporting and public communication.

The SGF emphasized that such lapses could easily be prevented through proper verification from authorised official sources. To facilitate this, the Office of the SGF has provided official communication channels for confirmation, including its Facebook handle (@OfficeoftheSGF), Instagram (OfficialOSGFNG), its X (formerly Twitter) handle (@OfficialOSGF), and the official email address info@osgf.gov.ng.
