Four Nigerians who escaped from Boko Haram and ISWAP captivity have been rescued by the Cameroon Defence Force and handed over to troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) at Kirawa in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. The rescued individuals, comprising one male and three females, were part of a larger group of 181 kidnapped victims rescued by troops across the North‑East between May 25 and May 28, 2026, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major‑General Michael Onoja, disclosed on Saturday, May 30.

According to Onoja, 148 of the victims – two males and 146 women and children – were freed by troops of Operation Savannah Shield from terrorists believed to be operating out of the Kuyambana Forest in Zamfara State. Preliminary investigations indicated that those victims had been abducted more than three months earlier from Galma Village in Wamba District of Mariga Local Government Area in Niger State. Following their release, the victims were escorted to the Local Government Area headquarters in Bangi and handed over to local authorities for subsequent reunification with their families.

Another 31 kidnapped victims were rescued from Zamfara State along the Bagega–Kawaye Road in Anka Local Government Area. Onoja explained that they had spent several weeks in captivity but managed to escape following an airstrike by Nigerian Air Force helicopter gunships operating west of Bagega Forest. A total of 16 terrorists were neutralised and 10 others arrested during the operations. The Director of Defence Media Operations described the achievements recorded within those four days as “indicative of the professionalism, valour, and unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to restore peace and security to the nation.”

In a separate follow‑up operation on 23 May 2026, troops acting on the arrest of a suspected drug peddler in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State seized a Toyota vehicle belonging to Akor Ochai Jacob, suspected of being used for drug distribution. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 503 pieces of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, 138 pieces of a substance believed to be Ice (methamphetamine), an unspecified amount of cash, and other sundry items.

The rescue of the four Nigerians by the Cameroon Defence Force and the broader military offensives across the North‑East and North‑West have been hailed as significant progress in the fight against insurgency and banditry. While many of the freed hostages are now being reunited with their families, the military has vowed to sustain its operations until all terrorist and criminal elements are flushed out.
