Troops of the 1 Brigade Operation FANSAN YAMMA have repelled a terrorist attack and neutralised one suspect during a follow‑up operation in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, the military announced on Wednesday.
According to an operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the troops responded to an attack on Kanoma District at about 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. The troops, operating in collaboration with elements of Combat Team 1 and Forward Operating Base Kanoma, moved swiftly to the scene and made contact with the assailants at Kanoma Hill.
A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued. The terrorists, overwhelmed by the troops’ superior firepower, were forced to retreat from the area.
After clearing the immediate threat, the troops conducted exploitation operations ahead of Kanoma Hill and encountered suspected terrorists riding on two motorcycles. The soldiers immediately engaged the suspects, neutralising one terrorist during the pursuit operation.
Items recovered from the scene included one AK‑47 rifle, one AK‑47 magazine loaded with four rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and two motorcycles believed to have been used by the terrorists. Two tyres of a Combat Support Kit vehicle belonging to Forward Operating Base Kanoma were damaged during the exchange of fire, but the damage did not affect the operation as troops sustained pressure on the fleeing terrorists.
No casualty was recorded among the troops during the operation, military authorities confirmed.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA, a joint military task force covering the North‑West zone, has intensified clearance and patrol operations across Zamfara State in recent weeks, focusing on bandit strongholds in Maru, Tsafe, Zurmi and Kaura Namoda local government areas.
