Fayemi Urges Oluyede, Bejide To Support Oyebanji After Ekiti Governorship Election

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has called on candidates who contested the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election to accept the outcome of the poll and support the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the interest of the state.

Fayemi made the appeal on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in a statement issued by his media office following the conclusion of the Ekiti governorship election. He specifically urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Wole Oluyede, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dare Bejide, to work with Governor Oyebanji after the election.

The former governor congratulated Oyebanji on his re-election and described the result as a reflection of the decision made by Ekiti residents through the electoral process.

Fayemi said elections should be viewed as democratic contests rather than conflicts, urging all candidates who participated in the election to consider the outcome in good faith and place the development of the state above political differences.

“Elections are contests, not wars. I urge the other candidates who contested this election to take the lessons from it in good faith and join hands with Governor Oyebanji in the task of building our state,” Fayemi said.

The former governor stressed that Ekiti’s progress depends on cooperation among political leaders, regardless of party affiliation. He said unity and collective responsibility have historically contributed to development in the state.

Fayemi noted that Oyebanji’s victory across all 16 local government areas of Ekiti represented strong support from voters for the governor’s administration.

He said the election result showed that many residents recognised the policies and programmes implemented during Oyebanji’s first term in office.

“I join other well-meaning Ekiti citizens and friends of our dear state in congratulating Governor Biodun Oyebanji on his decisive re-election,” Fayemi said.

He described the victory as an indication that voters appreciated what he called purposeful governance and urged the governor to continue building on achievements recorded during his first tenure.

Fayemi also commended the conduct of the election, saying Ekiti residents demonstrated political maturity through their participation in the electoral process.

He praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for their roles in ensuring that the election was conducted peacefully and orderly.

The former governor encouraged Oyebanji to focus on consolidating progress in key areas, including infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and human capital development.

He further appealed to Ekiti indigenes living within the state and in the diaspora to support the incoming administration as it begins another term.

According to Fayemi, continued cooperation between government, citizens, and stakeholders would be important in sustaining development efforts across Ekiti State.

The call comes after the conclusion of the governorship election, which saw Oyebanji secure another term in office, while opposition candidates participated in the contest under different political platforms.

As the new administration prepares to begin its second term, attention is expected to focus on policy continuity, governance priorities, and efforts to address the needs of residents across the state.
