Train Collides With Honda Car at Lagos PWD Railway Crossing, Disrupts Traffic as Emergency Teams Respond

Published on 9 October 2026 at 09:59

A train has collided with a Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Ikeja, Lagos State, disrupting traffic and prompting an emergency response along one of the city's busy transport corridors. The incident has renewed concerns about safety at locations where railway tracks intersect with public roads, particularly in areas experiencing heavy movement of motorists, pedestrians and commercial vehicles during morning commuting hours.

The collision occurred at approximately 6:54 a.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the railway crossing near PWD Bus Stop, along Agege Motor Road in Ikeja. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a public traffic update, reporting that a train had struck a Honda car on the tracks. Emergency responders and traffic management officials attended the scene as motorists encountered delays around the affected crossing.

According to LASTMA, the collision seriously affected vehicular movement while efforts were undertaken to clear the railway corridor. The agency reported that people at the scene had pushed the damaged vehicle away from the tracks, allowing emergency personnel to continue recovery operations.

In its public update, LASTMA stated that its officers were managing traffic while emergency responders attended to the situation. The agency confirmed that efforts were underway to evacuate the vehicle and restore normal movement through the affected area.

Images and video footage accompanying early reports showed a badly damaged car near the train, with several people gathered around the location. The footage provided evidence of the collision's physical impact but did not establish the number of occupants in the vehicle or whether anyone had sustained fatal injuries.

Although an early media report suggested that several people might have died, no verified casualty figure had been released by the relevant authorities at the time of reporting. Consequently, the incident cannot responsibly be described as having caused confirmed fatalities without an official statement or independently verified evidence.

The identity of the driver, the number of passengers and the precise circumstances leading to the collision had also not been established. Reports that the car was attempting to cross the railway line require further investigation to determine the sequence of events and whether traffic signals, crossing barriers or other safety measures were involved.

The incident caused concern because the PWD crossing has previously been associated with one of Lagos State's most serious railway accidents in recent years. Its location within a busy urban transport network makes the safe coordination of road and rail traffic particularly important.

On March 9, 2023, a train collided with a Lagos State Government staff bus at the PWD railway crossing. The bus was carrying government employees travelling to work when it was struck and dragged along the tracks towards Shogunle.

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice subsequently confirmed that six people died and approximately 96 others sustained injuries. The accident prompted investigations and criminal proceedings against the bus driver, Oluwaseun Osibanjo, who was accused of involuntary manslaughter and causing grievous harm.

The driver was arraigned before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja in May 2023. He pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. Those proceedings demonstrated the legal consequences that can follow serious collisions, although responsibility for the latest incident has not been determined.

At the time of the 2023 disaster, the then Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Fidet Okhiria, explained that information available to railway authorities suggested other motorists had stopped at the crossing while the government bus continued towards the tracks.

Okhiria urged motorists to respect railway crossing restrictions, stressing that drivers should not attempt to proceed when an approaching train presents a danger.

Another fatal incident occurred at the same PWD railway crossing on October 16, 2025, when a dispatch rider was struck by a moving train while attempting to cross towards the Ikeja Government Reserved Area.

LASTMA identified the motorcycle by registration number AGL 179 QR and reported that preliminary investigations indicated the rider had been travelling at excessive speed before attempting to cross ahead of the approaching train.

The rider died at the scene. Officials from LASTMA and the Shogunle Police Division secured the location, while the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the remains.

Reacting to that incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki warned that impatience and disregard for railway safety requirements could have fatal consequences.

He urged motorists and dispatch riders to obey traffic signals, exercise patience and avoid attempting to cross railway lines when trains were approaching.

The recurrence of collisions around PWD demonstrates the continuing importance of railway crossing safety in Lagos, where trains and road vehicles operate within closely connected transport networks.

Railway crossings require motorists to recognise that trains cannot manoeuvre around obstacles in the same manner as road vehicles. Their stopping distances can also be considerable, making compliance with warning systems essential.

For motorists, the safest response to an approaching train is to remain outside the crossing until the railway line is clear and movement is permitted. Drivers should never attempt to bypass closed barriers or race an approaching train.

The responsibility for preventing collisions also involves railway operators, traffic authorities and agencies responsible for maintaining road infrastructure. Functional warning equipment, visible road markings, appropriate barriers and public safety education all contribute to reducing risks.

The latest collision has also affected commuters who depend on the PWD corridor for access between Ikeja, Oshodi and surrounding neighbourhoods. Traffic disruption at a major railway crossing can extend beyond the immediate accident scene, affecting nearby roads and delaying journeys.

LASTMA's deployment of personnel to manage the situation was therefore important both for public safety and for preventing additional traffic incidents while emergency responders worked.

The presence of onlookers at accident scenes can create further difficulties for emergency personnel, particularly when damaged vehicles remain close to active railway infrastructure. Keeping access routes clear allows recovery teams to perform their duties without unnecessary obstruction.

Authorities have not yet publicly established whether the Honda driver disregarded a warning, encountered a mechanical problem or became trapped on the railway crossing. Assigning responsibility before those circumstances are investigated would be premature.

Similarly, there has been no verified announcement identifying the train operator, its destination or whether scheduled rail services experienced extended disruption following the collision.

Further information from LASTMA, the Nigerian Railway Corporation or Lagos emergency management authorities will be necessary to establish the full consequences of the incident.

The collision comes amid broader concerns about road safety across Lagos. On October 8, LASTMA reported another serious traffic incident involving two containerised trucks and three other vehicles around the Apostolic area towards Alapere, leaving two people injured.

Although that crash was unrelated to railway operations, both incidents illustrate the demands placed on emergency response services and traffic management personnel across the metropolis.

For residents and commuters around PWD, Friday's accident is particularly concerning because of the crossing's documented history of serious and fatal collisions.

The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the need for consistent enforcement of railway crossing regulations and sustained cooperation between motorists and transport authorities.

While emergency responders worked to restore movement, the immediate priority remained establishing the welfare of those involved and securing the affected railway corridor.

As investigations continue, the collision serves as another reminder of the dangers associated with road and rail intersections. Its precise cause and human consequences remain subject to official confirmation, but the incident reinforces the importance of observing crossing warnings and maintaining effective safety measures at locations used daily by thousands of Lagos commuters.
