August 25, 2025 – Residents of Garin Kolo faced yet another destructive downpour today, resulting in the collapse of homes, latrines, and wells. The heavy rainfall contaminated public water sources and exacerbated the hardships of families already struggling in the wake of prior floods.
The disaster has left the community highly vulnerable, with displacement, health risks, and loss of livelihoods compounding the suffering. During a personal visit to the affected area, officials witnessed both the scale of the destruction and the remarkable resilience of the community. Despite the devastation, youth and local residents remained hopeful and determined to recover.
In response, the Yobe State Government, under the directive of Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, announced an immediate plan to relocate all 250 affected households to safer areas in collaboration with the Local Government Area (LGA) authorities. Evacuation efforts will prioritize the protection of women and children while ensuring no household is left behind.
Governor Buni has mandated that all resources and attention be focused on Garin Kolo until residents are safely evacuated and supported. Officials on the ground reported submerged farmlands, destroyed homes, and disrupted livelihoods, yet highlighted the courage and faith of the community as a source of inspiration.
“We are committed to standing firmly with the people of Garin Kolo,” an official stated. “Your resilience is our motivation. Together with the support of government, partners, and volunteers, we will overcome this tragedy and rebuild stronger.”
The intervention underscores the government’s commitment to rapid disaster response, protection of vulnerable populations, and the restoration of essential services in flood-affected areas.
