In the aftermath of recent floods that impacted multiple communities in Potiskum, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in collaboration with the Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (WASSI) and supported by UNICEF, has provided hygiene kits to 150 households in Afghanistan, Makarahuta, and Filin Nashe communities.
The distribution followed a thorough house-to-house hygiene awareness campaign led by WASSI, aimed at equipping families with both knowledge and practical tools to maintain health and sanitation during the crisis.
SEMA Executive Secretary, Dr. Goje Mohammed, commended all partner organizations for aligning with the state government’s ongoing disaster response initiatives. “Our priority is to protect lives and help communities recover from this disaster,” he said.
Beyond hygiene support, the Yobe State Government has rolled out a multi-faceted response for affected families, including cash assistance to cover temporary shelter, provision of essential non-food items such as mats, blankets, mosquito nets, and washing supplies, and distribution of shelter kits with roofing materials and construction tools in collaboration with ACF. Dignity kits were also provided to support vulnerable members of the community.
Rescue and recovery efforts were coordinated by SEMA alongside local divers, the Fire Service, and the Red Cross. Tragically, two lives were lost during the floods: an elderly woman who died following a building collapse, and a 10-year-old girl who drowned in the floodwaters.
The coordinated humanitarian effort highlights the government’s commitment to restoring hope, safeguarding vulnerable populations, and strengthening community resilience in the face of natural disasters.
