The Wife of the Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Diri, has commended the impact of the state’s skills acquisition programmes, describing them as vital in producing a new generation of entrepreneurs. She made the remarks during the World Entrepreneurship Day celebrations held at the Late Chief DSP Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.
The event brought together beneficiaries of the Governor Douye Diri Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Programme, alongside key stakeholders in the state’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Bayelsa State, like many parts of Nigeria, continues to grapple with youth unemployment and economic dependency on oil revenues. The push for skills acquisition and entrepreneurship is seen as a long-term solution to diversifying the economy, tackling joblessness, and empowering citizens to become self-reliant.
In her address, Dr. Gloria Diri expressed gratitude that Bayelsa was part of the states celebrating World Entrepreneurship Day this year, noting that the achievement was possible because of the Diri Skills Acquisition Programme.
She emphasized that the visible presence of numerous young entrepreneurs at the event reflected a shift in Bayelsa’s economic narrative, where more citizens are embracing self-employment and enterprise.
The Governor’s wife commended the passion of skill beneficiaries—including solar installation trainees, painters, and artisans—whose testimonies served as evidence of real transformation in the state. She urged participants to remain resilient, innovative, and committed to expanding their businesses beyond the skills initially acquired.
Dr. Diri also commended Mrs. Charity Kens Godwin, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Entrepreneurship, for her efforts in organizing the event and fostering a supportive environment for business growth. Mrs. Kens Godwin, in her remarks, recognized outstanding entrepreneurs who have contributed significantly to Bayelsa’s economic development.
The celebration points to a bigger shift in Nigeria’s economic landscape, where skills acquisition and entrepreneurship are being positioned as the antidote to youth unemployment and dependence on public sector jobs.
For Bayelsa State, this initiative is more than empowerment—it is part of a long-term strategy to build a diversified economy beyond oil, tapping into human capital as the real engine of growth. Across Africa, similar efforts are driving the emergence of a young entrepreneurial class that is reshaping local economies and creating homegrown solutions.
The Bayelsa First Lady’s call underscores the fact that entrepreneurship is not a one-time achievement but a continuous journey requiring dedication, innovation, and resilience.
With sustained investment in skills development, mentorship, and enabling policies, Bayelsa has the opportunity to build a vibrant entrepreneurial hub where self-reliance, creativity, and productivity replace dependency and unemployment.
The message is clear: entrepreneurship is the future—and with the right support, Bayelsa’s young people can lead the way.
