Nigerian fashion designer and celebrity stylist, Veekee James, has revealed how a storm of online criticism after her marriage to Femi Atere almost drove her into depression.
The award-winning entrepreneur, who announced her marriage in late 2023 and later held elaborate ceremonies in Akwa Ibom and Lagos in 2024, said she was targeted by social media trolls who accused her of “snatching” her husband from a friend.
Speaking in a candid interview, James recounted how the false narrative spread across platforms, with many alleging that her partner was romantically involved with a friend before their wedding.
“The rumours shook me badly. I locked myself in my room for days, just crying and praying. I asked God to help me because everything being said was a lie,” she disclosed.
The fashion star said it was her faith that pulled her through the difficult period, which she now describes as a “miracle.” According to her, that experience gave her a new perspective on life and taught her not to give power to negative comments online.
“I read comments not because I want to feel hurt, but to know why I’m trending. Today, none of it gets to me anymore,” she said, adding that she is determined to raise children who can be role models in society.
Veekee James’ experience mirrors the pressure many public figures face in the digital age, where personal lives are often dragged into public scrutiny, and false rumours can spiral quickly into emotional turmoil.
