The Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has congratulated the Wazeerul Mumineen of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Sheikh Abdullateef Adekilekun, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described the revered cleric as “one of the rare gifts of Allah bequeathed to mankind,” praising his lifelong service to Islam and humanity.
Sheikh Adekilekun is widely recognized for his scholarship, leadership, and community service, making him a unifying figure across Yorubaland and beyond. His translation of the Quran into Yoruba has been described as a landmark achievement, bridging language gaps and deepening the understanding of Islamic teachings for millions of Yoruba-speaking Muslims.
His role in the Adabiya Islamic School in Ilorin, his service at the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies, and his decades of Islamic lectures and publications reflect a career of enduring impact.
Graduating from Cairo University in 1972, Sheikh Adekilekun’s journey combines scholarship with service. Beyond religious leadership, he served as Vice Chairman and later Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the old Ede Local Government in 1996. Today, he is the Grand Mufti of Edeland and head of the Adekilekun Dynasty of Ede, a role that blends spiritual authority with community stewardship.
The Governor’s tribute also draws attention to Sheikh Adekilekun’s historical and oratory gifts, which have influenced Islamic thought across generations. His leadership cuts across states in the Southwest and extends into Edo and Delta, consolidating his place as a pan-Yoruba Islamic figure.
In a region where religious and cultural leadership shapes community values, Sheikh Adekilekun’s life work underscores the interplay of faith, scholarship, and social development. Celebrating such figures not only honors personal milestones but also reinforces the importance of preserving knowledge traditions in Nigeria’s religious and cultural landscape.
Governor Adeleke’s felicitation is more than a birthday tribute—it is a recognition of a life committed to faith, education, and service. As Sheikh Adekilekun marks 80 years, his legacy continues to inspire generations of Muslims across Yorubaland and beyond. The Governor’s prayers for his continued health, wisdom, and guidance reflect the deep respect accorded to him both as a scholar and as a leader.
