The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards enhancing public transportation and boosting economic productivity in the Northern region by commencing plans to support light rail projects in key states. The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Ahmed Alkali, announced that the projects will start with Kaduna and Kano states, marking a new era of transportation and economic growth in the region.

Minister Alkali made the disclosure while chairing a discussion on infrastructure during the 2-day interactive session organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation in Kaduna. He noted that the project is being supported through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI). The Minister also spoke about the Renewed Hope Cities (RHC) Project, revealing that 3,112 housing units have been completed in Abuja, while Kano has 1,500 units and an additional 500-unit estate. In other states, 250-unit estates are being planned, with some already completed. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the economy, creating over 250,000 jobs across various sites.
The Minister highlighted the economic benefits of the project, stating that workers will earn an average monthly pay of ₦150,000. The project will also stimulate the creation of building material hubs and attract over ₦70 billion in private investment. These benefits will contribute to the growth and development of the region, improving the standard of living for citizens.
The Minister also provided updates on the standard gauge Kaduna-Kano railway modernisation project, stating that 53% has been completed. Additionally, the Kano-Maradi project is 61% completed, and a section of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway (61 km) has been finished and put into use. These projects will improve transportation infrastructure and facilitate economic growth in the region.
