The Kaduna State Government has commenced the distribution of 400 trucks of fertilizer to 100,000 smallholder farmers across all Local Government Areas. Each farmer will receive two bags of fertilizer at no cost. The government is also supporting commercial farmers with 10 bags of fertilizer per farmer at a 40% subsidized rate.
To reduce risk and increase resilience, the government is enrolling all 100,000 smallholder beneficiaries into a crop risk insurance scheme. This intervention protects farmers against losses from pests, diseases, and adverse weather linked to climate change.
The fertilizer distribution is part of the government's efforts to transform agriculture into a true engine of economic growth and development in Kaduna State. The government has increased the agricultural budget from ₦1.48 billion in 2023 to ₦74.02 billion in 2025, expanding the sector's share of the state budget from 0.4% to 10%.
Beyond inputs, the government is focused on long-term transformation. Initiatives include the Dry Season Agricultural Empowerment Program, deployment of tractors, rehabilitation of rural roads, and support for ginger and livestock farmers. The government has also launched the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) and established the Agricultural Quality Assurance Centre (AQAC) to build a robust value chain.
The Kaduna State Government's fertilizer distribution exercise is a significant step towards boosting agricultural productivity and enhancing food security. The government's commitment to agricultural transformation is evident in its increased budget allocation and initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and promoting economic growth.
