The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has celebrated the triumph of Nigeria’s Super Falcons with a heartfelt tribute to the team and a special recognition for Imo-born players and officials who contributed to the national team’s recent victory on the continental stage.
Addressing a jubilant crowd at a homecoming ceremony held at the Government House in Owerri, Governor Uzodimma expressed overwhelming pride in the Falcons' performance, noting that the achievement was particularly meaningful for Imo State given the significant representation of “our daughters” in both the squad and the technical crew.
“The excitement by Nigerians over the victory of the Super Falcons was immense,” Uzodimma said. “Here in Imo State, we were overwhelmed with joy, particularly because a significant number of our daughters proudly featured in the squad and the technical team. It was a moment of immense pride for our State.”
The governor commended the players for their resilience, tenacity, and commitment to national pride, noting that their dedication brought not only honour to the country but also served as a shining example of excellence and unity in sport.
In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma also extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the President’s magnanimity and public show of love toward the Super Falcons. Echoing that spirit of encouragement, Uzodimma presented gifts and tokens of appreciation to the Imo-born members of the team, reaffirming the state’s commitment to supporting homegrown talent.
“It was both a token of encouragement and a reaffirmation that Imo will always stand by and celebrate her own, at every level,” he added.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials, sports administrators, family members of the players, and a cross-section of sports enthusiasts. The Super Falcons, fresh from their championship victory, were visibly moved by the reception, with many describing the honour as deeply rewarding and motivating.
The Super Falcons recently secured victory at the continental championship, continuing their dominance as one of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams. Imo State has historically produced several top-tier athletes, and this recognition reinforces the state’s support for female sports development.
