The First Lady of Nigeria and National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has officially launched a far-reaching Women Economic Empowerment Programme in Minna, Niger State, targeting 18,500 women nationwide.
The initiative, executed in partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, aims to support 500 women per state, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with ₦50,000 grants each. The funds are designed to help women recapitalise their small businesses, enhance their families’ well-being, support their children's education, and contribute to community development.
Senator Tinubu disclosed that the empowerment programme was launched simultaneously in Niger and Adamawa States, as part of the broader national strategy of the Renewed Hope Initiative.
In her speech, the First Lady expressed deep appreciation to the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which generously donated ₦1 billion to the RHI to directly support women across the country. She described the foundation’s commitment to women's economic inclusion as "highly commendable and inspiring."
Also speaking at the event, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, wife of the Niger State Governor and State Coordinator of RHI, lauded the National Chairman of RHI for her unwavering dedication to the welfare of Nigerian women. She highlighted that the initiative is already making a lasting and visible impact in Niger State, empowering women to take charge of their economic destinies.
Hajiya Fatima also thanked the Tony Elumelu Foundation for partnering with RHI and encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the grant wisely to fulfill the programme’s objectives.
Similarly, Mrs. Mary Noel-Berje, Special Adviser to the Niger State Governor on Women and Affirmative Action, praised Senator Tinubu for her compassion and active support of women’s causes. She also commended Governor Umaru Bago for fostering inclusive leadership that empowers women across all sectors in the state.
The event included symbolic presentations of the grants to selected beneficiaries, marking the beginning of the disbursement process.
This empowerment programme is expected to strengthen thousands of women-led businesses across Nigeria, driving grassroots economic growth and reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive development.
