In a decisive move to foster transparency, professionalism, and public confidence, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled its Reputation Management Guide, a transformative policy designed to enhance ethical standards and elevate the Service’s public image.

The landmark launch event took place on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the NCS Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, with the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, leading the ceremony alongside top Customs management, communication professionals, and PR practitioners.

> “We want to launch a new phase of Customs. We want to go beyond our traditional mandate. This guide is an opportunity for every Customs officer to be part of a project that rewrites the history of our Service,”
— CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi

Repositioning for Integrity and Excellence

The Reputation Management Guide is crafted to serve as a practical compass for Customs officers, promoting integrity, transparency, and responsiveness in all aspects of their duties. It aligns with global customs practices and reflects the vision of a modern, service-oriented Customs administration.

As a veteran in public relations and an advocate for institutional branding, CGC Adeniyi emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader effort to reposition the NCS as a proactive, ethical, and people-focused institution.

He revealed the NCS’s significant performance milestones as evidence of this transformation:

70% revenue increase in 2023

92% revenue growth in 2024

Enhanced capabilities in anti-smuggling, trade facilitation, and national security

> “Beyond the numbers, what gladdens me most is that the world is taking note of the impact our initiatives are making,” he added.

Global Standards, Local Impact

Acknowledging the expectations of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), CGC Adeniyi reiterated the need for Nigerian Customs to lead with ethical leadership, gender inclusivity, and transparent governance.

The Customs boss also noted that this guide complements the NCS’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Recent CSR efforts include investments in:

Education

Healthcare

Access to clean water

Creative economy development

> “This guide is not just a document but a call to action. It reminds every officer that our image is built not only by what we do but also by how we do it,” Adeniyi stressed.

A Legacy of Service

In his closing remarks, CGC Adeniyi extended gratitude to President Tinubu for renewing his tenure, calling it a “renewed motivation and inspiration to do more in the service of the country.”

With the unveiling of the Reputation Management Guide, the NCS signals a new era of strategic leadership, ethical reform, and community-focused service.
