ABEOKUTA – Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Dr. Doyin Abiola, a trailblazer in Nigerian journalism and widow of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Dr. Abiola, the former Managing Director of the National Concord newspaper and a distinguished media figure, reportedly passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82.
In an official condolence message released on Wednesday, Governor Abiodun praised her resilience, professional excellence, and lasting contributions to both journalism and Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
> “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Doyin Abiola, a remarkable woman whose contributions to society and unwavering support for her late husband during the tumultuous period surrounding the June 12, 1993 presidential election in Nigeria will forever be remembered,” the Governor stated.
He highlighted her journalistic journey, beginning at the Daily Sketch and a brief stint with Daily Times, before her historic appointment as Managing Director of Concord Newspapers, making her one of the most influential female media executives in Nigeria.
Governor Abiodun emphasized her critical role during Nigeria’s democratic struggle:
> “She displayed excellent spirit in the fight for the validation of the annulled June 12 election as the person in charge of the Concord Group of Newspapers, owned by her then embattled husband. She played a significant role in advocating for the democratic ideals that many Nigerians still strive to uphold today.”
He noted her strength and resilience amid political unrest, standing beside her husband during one of Nigeria's darkest political moments:
> “Her unwavering dedication to justice, democracy, and the betterment of her country exemplifies the strength of her character. Her sacrifices, courage, and commitment to Nigeria’s democratic future will never be forgotten.”
Governor Abiodun extended his deepest condolences to the Abiola family, friends, and members of the media community who were inspired by her legacy:
> “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and all who admired her. We must continue to uphold her ideals and strive for the principles she passionately advocated for throughout her life.”
