Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the arrest of prominent activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, by the Nigeria Police Force, describing the development as a "miscarriage of justice and an abuse of state power."
Sowore was reportedly arrested on Thursday, shortly after voluntarily honouring a police invitation. His arrest has since sparked public outcry across civic and human rights platforms.
In a statement released Friday, Obi expressed concern over what he described as the increasing use of state power to silence dissent, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and democratic values.
> 🗣️ "The arrest of Mr. Omoyele Sowore, a citizen who honoured a police invitation voluntarily, is not only a violation of his rights but also a miscarriage of justice. This is an unacceptable abuse of state power," Obi stated.
He called on the police to either release Sowore immediately or formally charge him in court, noting that prolonged or arbitrary detention without due process is unconstitutional and undemocratic.
> 🗣️ "Our democracy must be protected from the erosion of civil liberties. The government must show respect for the law, and that begins with how it treats citizens who speak truth to power," he added.
⚖️ Background:
Omoyele Sowore is a known journalist, political activist, and publisher of Sahara Reporters. He has previously faced multiple arrests linked to his activism and critique of governance in Nigeria.
