Snator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, on Sunday received a coalition of higher institution students from across his constituency in a show of solidarity and appreciation at his residence in Maiduguri.
The delegation, which included representatives from the Borno Emirate Students Association (BESA), Gwoza Medical Students Association, and Kibaku Students Association, visited the Senator to express gratitude for his unwavering support for education and to seek his intervention in ongoing student-related challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the student coalition, the leaders hailed Senator Ndume as a "selfless and people-centered leader" whose contributions have significantly shaped the educational landscape in Borno South. They cited his role in establishing landmark institutions such as the Nigerian Army University in Biu, the Federal College of Education in Gwoza, and numerous infrastructural developments in primary and secondary schools.
“You have consistently supported students and remained committed to the educational future of our zone. Today, we are here to thank you and also present our current challenges,” the students said.
Among their demands were scholarships, improved welfare schemes, and more consistent inclusion in policy discussions.
In his response, Senator Ndume welcomed the students warmly, thanking them for their visit and reiterating his commitment to the educational advancement of the region. He pledged to expand the 2025 educational support programme and facilitate access to federal student loans.
“Some of your requests will be handled directly by me, while others need collaboration with local authorities. However, rest assured, education will continue to be a priority,” he stated.
He also announced a ₦1 million cash donation to the delegation as a show of support and confirmed his intention to attend their upcoming Cultural Day event.
Other Engagements
Following the student meeting, the Senator hosted the Mafaa community from Gwoza Local Government, led by Barr. James, who praised the Senator’s consistent efforts in driving development in the region.
“You have earned our loyalty through service and vision,” said Barr. James.
Youth groups from Gwoza also paid a courtesy visit during which Senator Ndume called on them to protect the identity and heritage of the Gwoza people.
“Miscreants want to ruin the name of Gwoza. Do not allow anyone to erase your identity,” he cautioned.
Senator Ndume extended financial support to the youth groups, further emphasizing his investment in grassroots mobilization and youth engagement.
Dignitaries present at the meetings included Hon. Abdullahi Buba Abatcha, Member Representing Gwoza at the Borno State House of Assembly, and Engr. Yuguda Vungus, former Commissioner for Electrification.
