The Kano State Police Command has issued a stern warning over the dangerous riding of tricycles—locally known as “Keke Napep” or “Adaidaita Sahu”—by underaged individuals within the Kano metropolis. The reckless practice has been linked to 16 serious road accidents in August 2025 alone, resulting in injuries and property damage.
The Command also expressed concern about the rising trend of traffic violations, particularly the flagrant disregard for traffic lights and road regulations by some motorists. Such behaviour has contributed to avoidable accidents, traffic congestion, and heightened risks to public safety across the state.
Police authorities reiterated that it is illegal for minors to operate tricycles, emphasizing the serious dangers posed not only to the riders but also to other road users. Parents and guardians are urged to prevent underaged children from engaging in such activities. Violators—including both riders and owners of the vehicles—will face strict penalties under the law.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, confirmed that enforcement teams have been deployed to clamp down on traffic offenses and underage riding. He assured residents of Kano State that the Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property by enforcing traffic laws rigorously.
The public is encouraged to cooperate with the police by adhering to traffic rules and reporting any incidents of underage tricycle operation, reckless driving, or other traffic violations. Reports can be made at the nearest police station or through the following emergency contact numbers:
-
08032419754
-
08123821575
-
09029292926
In his message, CP Bakori thanked the good people of Kano for their ongoing support, prayers, and cooperation in maintaining peace and order within the state.
The Kano State Police Command concluded by urging all citizens to join efforts in making the state’s roads safer for everyone.
