Festus Keyamo Clarifies Use of ‘Ambassador’ Title for Repentant Offenders

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has explained the rationale behind appointing repentant offenders as “Ambassadors” to promote positive conduct, saying the role is voluntary, unpaid, and aimed at public enlightenment.

In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Keyamo noted that it is a common global practice for reformed individuals to speak publicly against the exact misconduct from which they have repented — a concept similar to community service.

“Unfortunately, in Nigeria, some assume that once you hear the word ‘Ambassador’ it is a big position with perquisites of office. No, it is not. It is for free,” Keyamo wrote.

The minister added that this practice is not new in Nigeria, citing examples from previous administrations where repentant individuals were engaged in similar advocacy roles.

Keyamo revealed that while aviation agencies are considering engaging Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), as an advocate for good passenger behaviour, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) are also exploring the possibility of appointing Ms. Comfort Emmanson — who was released from prison custody earlier in the day — as their own “Ambassador” for passenger discipline.

He stressed that the AON will determine the details of Emmanson’s possible engagement, and reiterated that the government’s decision on the matter has been fair to all parties, despite criticism from some quarters.
