FEC Approves 7-Year Pause on New Federal Tertiary Institutions, Moves to Boost Power Supply

Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed key outcomes from the latest Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in Abuja, which he attended alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to Shettima, the Council endorsed a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal tertiary institutions. The decision aims to allow government to focus resources on upgrading existing facilities and improving staffing across the nation’s universities, polytechnics, and colleges.

In a significant boost for Nigeria’s power sector, the FEC also approved grid modernisation projects and the acquisition of new high-capacity transformers — measures expected to enhance electricity supply nationwide.

The meeting also paid tribute to the late Chief Audu Ogbeh, acknowledging his contributions to national development. Additionally, a new leadership team was welcomed at the Nigeria Law Reforms Commission, signalling a renewed drive for legal reforms in the country.
