The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has reacted to the disturbing allegations made by twelve Nigerian workers recently rescued from the Central African Republic (CAR), who accused their Chinese employers of sexual abuse, starvation, and non-payment of salaries.
The workers, who were received at the office of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in Abuja, narrated their ordeal of being stranded for nearly 20 months under inhumane conditions. According to their leader, Igorigo Freeborn, they were subjected to sexual abuse by their Chinese employers, starved, and denied their salaries for over 11 months.
“We were homosexually abused by our Chinese employers in CAR. I am not ashamed to say it. They treated us like animals, leaving us without food, medical care, or wages,” Freeborn lamented.
NIDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, strongly condemned the inhumane treatment, describing it as “unacceptable and barbaric.” She assured that the Commission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies, will pursue the case diplomatically to ensure justice for the victims. She also announced financial support packages to aid the reintegration of the returnees.
Chinese Embassy’s Response
In a cautious statement, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria said it has taken note of the allegations and will “immediately commence an investigation.”
The Embassy emphasized that due process will be followed, while stressing that Chinese nationals abroad are required to obey the laws of their host countries. It also advised that the allegations should not be further circulated or cited until the investigation is concluded.
Government Intervention
The rescue mission was jointly coordinated by NIDCOM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NEMA, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in CAR. The agencies ensured medical checks, emergency relief, and safe return of the abused workers.
The case has sparked calls for greater protection of Nigerian workers abroad, especially those employed in mining and construction sectors where exploitative practices are common.
