The Nigeria Police Force has taken a major step in strengthening its fight against cybercrime with the completion of a specialized nationwide capacity training on the Athena Forensic Intelligence Solution (AFIS).
The training, which ran from July 9 to August 15, 2025, involved 192 officers drawn from the 36 state commands, the FCT, and 10 specialized formations. It was organized in partnership with Radio Tactics Group Limited to boost officers’ capacity in digital investigations, forensic intelligence, and cybercrime response.
The programme featured experts from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and Radio Tactics Group, who trained participants on:
-
Threat identification and cyber-intelligence gathering
-
Extracting and analyzing communication and location data from SIM cards, GPS devices, and satellite phones
-
Handling grey-market mobile devices
-
Biometric capture and digital profiling
-
Using forensic hotlists to match intelligence records with operational data
Police authorities say these new mission-ready skills will improve investigations, enhance intelligence gathering, and strengthen responses to cyber-related offenses nationwide.
In a related operation, NPF-NCCC operatives arrested three suspects — Gbenga Samuel, Dele Titus, and Olalekan Oke — in Abuja and Lagos for alleged involvement in cyberstalking, identity theft, and online fraud schemes.
Investigations revealed that on July 18, 2025, the suspects hacked into a victim’s WhatsApp account, threatening to leak confidential data unless ₦3 million ransom was paid. Forensic analysis led to their arrest, recovery of the account, and the discovery of a larger organized cybercrime network now under investigation.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, reiterated that his administration is committed to embracing modern, digitalized approaches in crime-fighting. He emphasized continuous training and re-training of officers to meet global best practices in tackling emerging threats.
“Our mission is to stay ahead of criminals by equipping our officers with the tools and knowledge needed to secure Nigerians in the digital age,” the IGP stated.
