The political debate over Nigeria’s future leadership deepened on Monday after Biodun Ajiboye, a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC), cast strong doubt on Peter Obi’s ability to govern better than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking on Politics Today, a flagship Channels Television programme, Ajiboye dismissed Obi’s much-celebrated legacy in Anambra State, arguing that his track record does not justify the “miracle worker” image projected by supporters of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
“Even if you produce a million Obis, none can surpass Tinubu. What miracle did he perform in Anambra?” Ajiboye declared.
Ajiboye vigorously defended the Tinubu administration’s economic agenda, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of exchange rates.
He described the reforms, though painful, as unavoidable steps to prevent Nigeria’s economy from collapsing.
“The only question we should ask ourselves now is: do we want to go through the tough times now and enjoy later, or continue and crash completely? The nation was going to crash if such steps were not taken,” he explained.
According to him, Tinubu’s decision to halt unsustainable subsidies on electricity and fuel reflects a leader willing to take bold but unpopular actions for the sake of long-term stability.
Ajiboye also took aim at opposition figures, including Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing them of shying away from Nigeria’s hard economic realities.
He insisted that Tinubu’s governance style, rooted in his Lagos State reforms, offers a more credible model for national revival than the alternatives being presented by opposition leaders.
The remarks come amid mounting public debate over whether Nigeria’s current economic hardships—rising inflation, job losses, and high cost of living—are temporary sacrifices or signs of deeper mismanagement.
While Ajiboye urged patience and resilience, critics argue that ordinary Nigerians are bearing the brunt of policies that have yet to translate into tangible relief.
✅ The clash of narratives between ruling party loyalists and opposition leaders underscores the battle for political legitimacy ahead of 2027, where Tinubu, Obi, and Atiku remain central figures in Nigeria’s evolving political drama.
