Anambra Police Condemn Assault on Female Corps Member in Oba

The Anambra State Police Command has strongly condemned the alleged assault on a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. The incident was reportedly carried out by local vigilante operatives.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects involved in the attack have been identified. However, the ongoing investigation has been temporarily stalled due to the unavailability of the victim, who is yet to come forward.

The Command stressed that assault in any form is a criminal offence under Nigerian law, warning that those found culpable would face legal consequences once investigations are concluded.

“While we await the victim’s cooperation, the Command reserves the right to take necessary legal steps to aid court proceedings. Vigilante groups and other quasi-security outfits are hereby cautioned against brutality or abuse of authority, as such acts will not be condoned,” the statement read.

Reassuring NYSC members serving across Anambra, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to their protection and urged corps members to promptly report incidents of harassment, intimidation, or abuse for swift police intervention.

The case has renewed conversations about the activities of local vigilante groups across Nigeria, with rights advocates calling for stricter regulations to curb human rights abuses while balancing community security needs.
