Omoyele Sowore Condemns Arrest of Youths in Borno State Over WhatsApp Protest Group

Activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has condemned what he described as the unlawful arrest of youths in Borno State, criticizing the state government for jailing minors allegedly involved in a WhatsApp protest group. The statement was made via his official Twitter/X account.

Sowore highlighted that the arrested youths had merely exercised their constitutional rights to association and expression in preparation for the 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest. He contrasted this action with the state government’s recent allocation of billions of naira to so-called “repentant” Boko Haram militants, describing it as hypocritical and unjust.

“This outrageous act exposes the hypocrisy of a government that pampers terrorists while criminalizing peaceful dissent,” Sowore tweeted.

He called for the immediate and unconditional release of the youths, as well as official apologies, compensation, and rehabilitation from Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum. Sowore also held the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, accountable for the actions of officers involved in the arrests.

The incident raises concerns about freedom of expression, civic space, and youth participation in governance in Nigeria. Analysts warn that actions such as these can undermine democratic values, erode public trust in government, and suppress legitimate dissent. Civil society voices emphasize the need for protecting constitutional rights, ensuring accountability, and promoting constructive engagement between government and citizens.

Sowore’s statement underscores the importance of upholding human rights and democratic freedoms in Nigeria. Arbitrary arrests of peaceful protesters not only violate constitutional protections but also risk alienating youth and civil society, highlighting the urgent need for transparent governance, accountability, and respect for civic participation.
