Turkey’s First Lady Urges Melania Trump to Advocate for Gaza’s Children

Turkey’s First Lady, Emine Erdoğan, has written a personal letter to Melania Trump, appealing for the same compassion toward Palestinian children in Gaza that she has previously shown to victims of the war in Ukraine.

In her message, Mrs. Erdoğan reminded the U.S. First Lady of her past advocacy for children affected by conflict, including her intervention over the plight of 648 Ukrainian children killed and nearly 20,000 abducted during three years of war with Russia.

According to reports, Melania Trump had earlier addressed a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin on behalf of abducted Ukrainian children – an act that Erdoğan described as “a moral and historic gesture.”

But she stressed that Gaza’s crisis demands equal urgency, noting that an estimated 18,000 children have been killed in the enclave over the past two years amid ongoing Israeli military operations.

“These days, when the world is experiencing a collective awakening and the recognition of Palestine has become a global will, I believe your call on behalf of Gaza would fulfil a historic responsibility toward the Palestinian people,” Erdoğan wrote.

She suggested that Melania Trump write to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging an end to the bombardments and restrictions devastating civilians.

The letter underscores growing international appeals for parity in humanitarian concern, as many nations and human rights organizations accuse world powers of applying double standards in addressing global conflicts.

While the West has strongly condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, critics say similar urgency has not been applied to the suffering in Gaza. Analysts argue that a public intervention from a high-profile figure like Melania Trump could increase pressure on Israel and its allies, especially Washington, to reconsider their stance on the crisis.

Emine Erdoğan’s appeal comes at a time when momentum for Palestinian recognition is gaining traction globally, with several European and Latin American countries recently elevating their diplomatic stance toward Palestine.

For Turkey, the move also reinforces its role as a vocal advocate for Gaza, reflecting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s long-standing criticism of Israel’s military campaigns and calls for a two-state solution.

This exchange highlights how personal diplomacy and soft power are being used alongside official channels to spotlight humanitarian suffering – especially of children – in conflict zones.
