Lecturers at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have staged a protest over what they described as poor welfare conditions affecting their members.
The lecturers, who marched within the university premises, called on the Federal Government to urgently address their demands, which include an upward review of salaries, payment of three months’ outstanding wages, and settlement of promotion arrears.
Speaking during the demonstration, the union members lamented that the prolonged neglect of their welfare had weakened their morale and adversely impacted their academic responsibilities.
They warned that if the government failed to act swiftly, the situation could escalate into a total shutdown of academic activities at the institution.
The protest underscores the growing concerns within the education sector over funding, staff welfare, and the sustainability of Nigeria’s university system.
