Amnesty International Demands End to Harassment of Activist Omoyele Sowore

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to immediately halt what it described as the “relentless harassment, intimidation, and persecution” of human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore, who has been at the forefront of civic activism in Nigeria, is currently facing multiple charges ranging from alleged terrorism financing to money laundering and fraud—accusations Amnesty International insists are politically motivated. His arraignment in court today, the group said, reflects another attempt to silence dissent and shrink Nigeria’s civic space.

The rights organisation also condemned the reported investigation into bank accounts linked to Sowore and his media platform, Sahara Reporters, describing it as part of a wider campaign to clamp down on independent journalism and free expression.

According to Amnesty International, Sowore has endured arbitrary arrests, prolonged detentions, and other violations since being declared a Prisoner of Conscience in 2019. The group further alleged that he has recently suffered torture and ill-treatment in police custody and urged Nigerian authorities to investigate and hold those responsible accountable through fair trials.

Amnesty International stressed that Sowore’s activism is peaceful and rooted in the promotion of human rights, social justice, and the rule of law, and therefore, all charges against him should be dropped without delay.

Stone Reporters News notes that this latest development has again drawn global attention to concerns about freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and civic participation in Nigeria.
