Dr. Zainab Shinkafi, paediatrician and founder of Medicaid Cancer Foundation and Medicaid Radio-Diagnostics, as well as President-Elect of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) 2024–2026, delivered a lecture on cancer to participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 18 during the 2025 Health Week organized by the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) in Bwari, Abuja.
Addressing around 80 participants from six African countries, Dr. Shinkafi highlighted the urgent need for education and awareness on cancer, noting its nearly 10 million annual deaths worldwide. She emphasized the importance of health security among personnel whose roles are crucial for national safety. Discussions also focused on challenges such as myths, misconceptions, and criminal activities affecting healthcare, including diversion of medical supplies.
Participants engaged actively, asking questions about cancer screening rates, the connection between fatty liver and liver cancer, and strategies to train more health workers to reduce missed diagnoses. In recognition of her contributions, Dr. Shinkafi was presented with an award by the organizing team and toured NISS facilities, including the DSS Medical Center named in honor of her late father, Umaru Shinkafi, former Director General of the National Security Organization.
Dr. Shinkafi expressed gratitude to the organizing committee, sponsors, and partners, stressing that promoting health awareness in security institutions is a legacy worth sustaining.
