The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has called on staff of the Federal Department of Cooperative to actively implement the Renewed Hope Cooperative Reform and Revamp Programme (RH-CRRP), a strategic initiative aimed at creating community wealth, shared prosperity, and an inclusive cooperative ecosystem across Nigeria.
Speaking during a one-day workshop and retreat at the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) Complex in Abuja, the Minister described the programme as a comprehensive home-grown blueprint designed to position the cooperative movement as a central driver of food security, job creation, and inclusive economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Presidency.
Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi highlighted that cooperatives worldwide have lifted millions out of poverty, expanded access to finance, and strengthened community resilience. “Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind,” he stressed, “that is why we must reform, revamp, and reposition the cooperative sector to meet present and future demands.”
Key components of the reform include policy and regulatory changes to enhance governance and accountability, digitalization of cooperative registrations at both federal and state levels, capacity building for cooperators and officers focusing on entrepreneurship and financial literacy, and institutional strengthening of the Federal Department of Cooperative.
The retreat also aimed to resolve internal differences, foster synergy among staff, and deepen understanding and ownership of the RH-CRRP. “This retreat should mark a turning point,” the Minister urged, “where every staff member, from Federal Directors to recently recruited officers, commits to one team, serving one vision for one Nigeria.”
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, encouraged staff to seize the opportunity to strengthen bonds across all cadres, while the Director of the Federal Department of Cooperatives, Alhaji Idris Sani, noted that the programme would reinforce the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (CFN) as the umbrella body for the nation’s cooperative movement.
Experts suggest that while the initiative presents significant opportunities for inclusive growth and community development, obstacles such as resistance to reform, technological adoption challenges, and capacity gaps must be addressed to achieve its full potential.
