Fredrick Nwabufo Writes: The Abike Dabiri I Know

Published on 7 September 2025 at 08:44

Journalist and columnist Fredrick Nwabufo has penned a reflective piece on Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, portraying her as a woman of brilliance, passion, and humility whose career in public service has consistently borne the mark of excellence.

He recalled her early years as the iconic face of Newsline in the 1990s and 2000s, where she built a reputation for professionalism and dedication. Moving into public office, Dabiri-Erewa became the pioneer chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), where her leadership has seen numerous interventions on behalf of distressed citizens abroad.

From the rescue of Nigerians trafficked to the Central African Republic, to the 2019 intervention for FUTO students stranded in Bosnia, and the safe return of over 1,500 young Nigerians from Ghana and other African countries, Nwabufo described her as a tireless advocate for her compatriots.

He noted that Dabiri-Erewa has not shied away from directly engaging citizens on social media, often responding personally to diaspora concerns — a quality that makes her one of the most accessible public servants. Although this openness has at times drawn criticism and even misrepresentation, Nwabufo argued that her track record reflects inclusivity rather than bias.

Citing her sponsorship of Igbo triplets during her time in the House of Representatives, he dismissed suggestions that she harbors prejudice, stressing that such claims are unfounded. He also clarified the much-circulated 2019 remarks on Nigerians in Indonesian prisons, saying they were distorted from their original context, which was focused purely on welfare concerns.

While acknowledging that recent events — such as the handling of crises like the evacuation of students from Sudan — have stirred debate about NiDCOM’s performance, he maintained that Dabiri-Erewa has consistently acted in the best interest of Nigerians abroad.

Nwabufo concluded by cautioning against the spread of false narratives, affirming that Abike Dabiri-Erewa remains a committed public servant whose interventions continue to save lives and strengthen Nigeria’s bond with its diaspora.
