Bayelsa Cracks Down on Illegal Timber Dealers to Protect Environment in Brass

Published on 11 September 2025 at 10:12

In a decisive move to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable development, the Task Force on Deforestation in Brass Local Government Area has launched an operation targeting timber dealers in Sangana Kingdom. The initiative aims to curb the unlawful felling of trees, following the recent enactment of a law by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly designed to tackle deforestation across the state.

The operation has already seen the impounding of sawing machines from offenders, signaling the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations. Sangana, a coastal community in the Niger Delta, faces serious environmental challenges, including sea encroachment, which is further worsened by rampant deforestation. These activities threaten not only the local ecosystem but also the livelihoods of residents who depend on fishing, farming, and other natural resources.

Speaking on the initiative, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere (High Chief), urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and all stakeholders to support government efforts in combating environmental degradation. “Deforestation leads to increased flooding, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity, which destabilizes our ecosystem and endangers communities,” he warned.

The Speaker emphasized that the task force’s operations are aimed at ensuring environmental protection while fostering sustainable development in the region. He called for a collaborative approach between the government and local communities, highlighting that the fight against deforestation requires active participation from all stakeholders.

Community members have welcomed the crackdown, expressing hope that the enforcement of environmental laws will preserve the region’s natural resources for future generations. Local leaders stressed that continued vigilance and cooperation are essential to prevent further environmental damage and to safeguard livelihoods.

The operation underscores the Bayelsa State Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and serves as a warning to offenders that illegal timber activities will not be tolerated. Authorities have reiterated that sustained community engagement and support are critical to the success of these initiatives, ensuring a greener, safer, and more resilient Brass Local Government Area.
