Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Wednesday commissioned three landmark healthcare and education projects in Monguno town, northern Borno, including an eye hospital, a dental hospital, and a nursing college, while also approving 3 billion naira for the construction of a Specialist Hospital and 100 houses for health workers.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Zulum emphasized the critical role of human resources in healthcare delivery, noting that the nursing college will train nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals to address workforce shortages in rural healthcare facilities. “What matters is not only the construction of facilities, but human resources for health are a key ingredient that will ensure the provision of quality healthcare in Borno State,” he stated.

The newly commissioned eye hospital, equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical tools, will provide sight-saving treatments and surgeries locally, targeting conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and trachoma, thereby reducing preventable blindness in the region. The dental hospital will offer a comprehensive range of services, from basic check-ups to complex procedures, addressing a long-neglected aspect of healthcare in northern Borno. In line with these initiatives, the governor flagged off free eye surgery operations for 5,000 less privileged residents in the area.

Governor Zulum also announced the allocation of 3 billion naira for the construction of a Specialist Hospital in Monguno, which will serve as a referral centre for northern Borno’s 10 local government areas. The facility, when completed, will be fully equipped with state-of-the-art medical technologies such as MRI and CT scan, and will also introduce residency training for medical doctors to bridge the region’s human resource gap.

Addressing the housing needs of healthcare personnel, the governor approved the construction of 100 housing units for health workers in Monguno. Interim arrangements are being made to provide accommodation in existing edifices while the new housing estate is being constructed. “Beneficial accommodation will soon be provided to all staff so they can live comfortably,” Zulum said.

The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Senator representing northern Borno, Barr Mohammed Tahir Monguno, APC Chairman Bello Ayuba, Member representing Monguno at the House of Representatives, Engr Bukar Talba, Speaker Borno State House of Assembly Abdulkarim Lawan, and other senior government officials.

The projects underscore Governor Zulum’s commitment to improving healthcare access, addressing workforce shortages, and ensuring quality service delivery in Borno State, particularly in the northern local government areas.
