Osogbo, September 12, 2025 – The Osun State Government has announced the appointment of Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe as Director-General and Special Envoy to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy. The decision, approved by Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, underscores the state’s determination to consolidate its leadership in climate governance and renewable energy innovation.

Over the years, Prof. Obuaku-Igwe has gone beyond advisory roles to establish a robust climate governance framework for Osun. Her leadership has driven initiatives that trained thousands of youths and women in circular economy and waste-to-wealth ventures, leading to the rise of hundreds of green small and medium enterprises. She spearheaded the establishment of a recycling hub that processes mega tonnes of recyclables monthly, creating formal jobs and strengthening the state’s waste management system. She also championed the Imole Solar Lantern Campaign, which distributed over 10,000 solar lanterns to rural pupils, thereby improving education outcomes and cutting household energy costs.

In addition, her work in promoting sustainable mobility introduced an e-bike pilot project designed to reduce urban transport emissions and cut fuel costs for operators. She was instrumental in developing strategic policies, including the Osun Climate Action Plan, Renewable Energy Policy, and Circular Economy Framework, positioning Osun as a pioneer in sub-national climate action across South West Nigeria. Her advocacy has also elevated Osun’s visibility at international platforms such as COP28 in Azerbaijan and the Citizens Lobby Conference in Washington DC, attracting climate-linked investments into the state.

These interventions have contributed to an increase in Osun’s green economy GDP and facilitated the creation of more than 2,500 jobs across clean energy, recycling, and sustainable mobility projects. With her new mandate, Prof. Obuaku-Igwe will operate directly under the Governor, driving high-level partnerships with global climate agencies, coordinating the implementation of Osun’s Climate Action Plan, and ensuring that the state retains its role as a leader in climate-smart governance on both national and continental fronts.

Governor Adeleke’s administration emphasized that the appointment complements the work of the Department of Climate Change under the Ministry of Environment while elevating Osun’s international climate diplomacy. The government congratulated Prof. Obuaku-Igwe and reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous green economy for the people of Osun State.
