Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents of Bomadi Local Government Area following the abduction of a senior Army officer, identified as Lt.-Col. Josiah, by suspected militants in the early hours of Sunday.
The officer, who had returned to his lodge after attending a wedding ceremony in nearby Kpakiama community, was reportedly whisked away around 2:30 a.m. when the armed group stormed the officers’ quarters, firing sporadically to create panic.
Eyewitnesses said the militants ransacked all rooms at the facility, collected mobile phones from occupants, and forced the officer into a waiting vehicle. Bloodstains were also sighted at the premises after the attack.
“The gunmen invaded the lodge between 2 and 2:30 a.m. They went room by room, seized phones from guests, and then dragged the officer out. They fired several shots before speeding away with him,” a local source who pleaded anonymity told Stone Reporters News.
In response, soldiers from the Joint Task Force (JTF) stationed in Bomadi, alongside local vigilantes, have launched intensive search operations in bushes and surrounding communities. Their efforts paid off partially when the abandoned vehicle used in the abduction was recovered near Tuomo, along the Tuomo–Ogbobagbene–Tamigbe–Torugbene–Ojobo road, and taken to the JTF base at Bomadi-Overside.
The incident has triggered widespread fear among residents, many of whom worry about potential reprisals against civilians in the area. Groups of people were seen huddled across Bomadi and adjoining towns on Tuesday, discussing the shocking development and expressing concerns over possible fallout.
Military authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the abduction as at press time, leaving many unanswered questions and heightening the atmosphere of uncertainty.
