Ogun State Issues Flood Alert, Urges Residents in Flood-Prone Communities to Relocate

Published on 15 September 2025 at 16:05

The Ogun State Government has issued a strong warning to residents living in flood-prone communities across the state to relocate to safer areas between the last week of September and the second week of October 2025, due to the expected overflow of major rivers and rising sea levels.

The caution was contained in the 2025 Midterm Flood Alert, released on Sunday by the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya. Communities listed include Isheri, Warewa, Akute, parts of Abeokuta, Ayetoro, Itele, Iju, and coastal towns such as Makun, Oni, Iwopin, Igele, Ifaara in Ogun Waterside, Ebute-Imobi in Ijebu East, Tungeji Island, and Agosasa in Ipokia Local Government Area.

According to Oresanya, the alert follows predictions of high rainfall and heavy inflows from the northern part of Nigeria and neighbouring Benin Republic, which are expected to flow into Ogun and Lagos States. He added that the situation of the Ogun River may be worsened by the controlled release of water from the Oyan Dam.

The commissioner explained that the flooding, which may last up to two weeks, is part of the second phase of the annual flood season that typically runs from September through November. He noted that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has projected rainfall peaks of 204mm in September, 190mm in October, and a reduced intensity of 93mm in November.

To mitigate risks, Oresanya assured that the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is on red alert to coordinate evacuations where necessary, with temporary camps already prepared across the state. He added that the Ministry of Environment is working closely with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to manage water releases from Oyan Dam and minimize the impact.

Residents were also cautioned against using water from boreholes and wells if flooding occurs, as contamination is likely. Fish farmers in the affected areas were urged to harvest their stock early to prevent losses from floodwaters.

The commissioner reaffirmed that the state government remains committed to protecting lives and property, urging residents to take the warnings seriously and act proactively.
