Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has arrived in Accra, Ghana, for the 2025 Democracy Dialogue which is being held today, Wednesday.

Themed “Why Democracies Die”, the dialogue is organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in collaboration with the Government of Ghana. The event is expected to gather heads of state, former leaders, policymakers, academics, civil society actors, and international partners to deliberate on the fragility of democracy and the growing threats it faces in Africa and beyond.

According to the Foundation, the dialogue will interrogate why democratic systems are weakening despite years of investment in governance reforms, and will propose solutions that strengthen institutions, safeguard freedoms, and promote inclusive leadership. Panel discussions will focus on electoral integrity, the role of technology in democracy, the rise of military coups in West Africa, and strategies for protecting civic space against authoritarian tendencies.

There is also anticipation that the forum will issue a communiqué recommending actionable steps for African governments, regional blocs, and international partners to address recurring governance challenges. Delegates will explore how to enhance youth and women participation in politics, build resilience against misinformation, and ensure that democracy translates into tangible socio-economic development for citizens.

For Dr. Jonathan, the Democracy Dialogue serves as a platform to advance his long-standing advocacy for peace, credible elections, and inclusive governance. The event is expected to strengthen regional cooperation in protecting democratic values at a time when many countries are grappling with declining trust in political institutions.
