Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has extended his heartfelt sympathy to the people of Iwo following the devastating flood that swept through the town on Friday after hours of heavy rainfall. The incident left residents counting heavy personal and material losses, prompting the governor to pledge urgent and long-term interventions to prevent a recurrence.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described the scale of destruction as monumental and deeply painful. He assured residents that his administration would take stock of the damages and provide necessary support to victims of the disaster.

“I am devastated to learn about the monumental damage caused by flooding in Iwo on Friday. The scale of the losses suffered by our people is especially heavy and I can only imagine the toll on them,” the governor said.

The governor highlighted measures already taken by his administration to mitigate flooding, including the dredging of the Aiba waterways to improve drainage. He added that following this latest incident, additional resources have been mobilised for the expansion and channelisation of more waterways across Iwo and its environs.

Furthermore, Governor Adeleke directed the Commissioner of Environment to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and recommend lasting solutions to address the recurring challenge. He also appealed to residents to complement government efforts by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, which often contributes to flooding.

“As a government, we stand with the people of Iwo in this difficult moment and assure them of our commitment to support them in overcoming the challenges caused by the flood,” the governor reiterated.
