Lagos NMA Rejects Salary Cuts, Demands Better Conditions for Doctors

The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has firmly rejected any salary deductions or distorted pay structures for doctors in the state, warning that it will take decisive action whenever necessary to defend the dignity of the profession and the health rights of Nigerians.

Speaking at a media briefing themed “A Critical Appraisal of Nigerian Budgetary Allocations for Health, Negotiating for Better Medical Salary Scale and Relativity for Medical Doctors”, the branch Chairman, Dr. Babajide Saheed, described as shameful the persistent underfunding of healthcare despite increased government revenues. He lamented that Nigerian doctors remain overworked, underpaid, and are increasingly migrating abroad in search of better opportunities.

The briefing, held ahead of the 2025 Annual Scientific Conference of Doctors in Lagos State, spotlighted long-standing issues of poor working conditions and salary distortions. Dr. Saheed demanded the immediate reversal of July and August 2025 salary cuts imposed on doctors in Lagos State, condemning the policy as unjust and demoralizing.

He also criticized policymakers, including the Minister of Health and State Commissioners of Health, for prioritizing project commissioning and research partnerships over addressing urgent manpower shortages in the health sector.

Other issues raised included the non-provision of Call Duty meals at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the continued tenure of Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye as Acting Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, which the association described as problematic.

The 2025 Scientific Conference of the NMA, a week-long event, will feature sub-themes such as Medical-Legal Challenges in Practice and free medical outreach programmes for the masses, aimed at bridging healthcare gaps in society.
